- Describes the first contact on the beach between Aboriginal people of Botany Bay and the Sydney area; Coomun threw a spear at James Cook's landing party, William Parkinson drew this and his illustration is included with the essay; information about the spears and fish gigs used, shields and woomeras and where NSW examples are now held - in the Cook Collection of the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology at Cambridge University; the story of the spearman Coomun was passed down through the generations; Tupaia's sketchbook shows men fishing in a canoe; three Englishmen from the 'Endeavour' collected a total of sixty words from the local people; migration of whales and rock carvings of them in the Sydney area
