- Jan. 28, 1836; Refers to Batmans contact with natives at Dutergallar on south coast of New Holland; William Buckley, a convict who absconded in 1803, discovered still living with Aborigines; copy of report by J.H. Wedge of Survey Dept on excursion to Port Phillip and south coast of New Holland mentions friendliness of natives; marital links with Sydney natives; practice of cannibalism in time of war; treachery within tribes; murder of newborn babies common; polygamy common; women subservient to men, often chastised with firestick; link with mosaic law in what widows become property of deceaseds eldest brother or next of kin; infidelity can be bought; daughters promised in marriage at birth; men prohibited from looking at mother-in-law, although no penalty for doing so; no permanent enmity between tribes; dexterous in use of weapons and in tracking; lists food consumed and mentions enormous quantity consumed; no apparent religious observances, after-death beliefs; gives native place names
