Summary
[Abstract from AIATSIS Research - Leonora Adidi] The diaspora of Torres Strait Islanders across the continent and globally are using the internet and mobile phones for communication in growing numbers. Increasingly, this population is using its own languages when using social media: languages which were traditionally and historically orally transmitted are now being used in written forms on a daily basis. This bucks the international trend of endangered Indigenous languages being used in fewer and fewer domains. This seminar explores the Torres Strait Islanders? usage of their languages in social networking sites and SMS messaging to communicate among themselves and with a broader audience. It discusses the formal, informal and instructional contexts of language use by the bilingual and multilingual Torres Strait Islander social networking community. It raises implications for literacy in our languages and how this form of language expression can be harnessed for language maintenance and revitalisation. It finds a community of language users eager to speak, read & write in their traditional languages, learn, teach and share their languages with others
