Summary
'This book proposes a total approach to the design of justice facilities that integrates the values of local communities, based on first hand experience in Australia. A broad range of principles in Australian Aboriginal culture are identified and a systematic philosophy and methodology is developed to ensure that design is meaningful, effective and relevant. The discussion includes a history of Aboriginal engagement in Australia, community architecture movements of the late twentieth century, an architectural perspective on Indigenous courts, a case study of the Kalgoorlie courthouse design project which focused, in equal measure, on both colonial heritage and Aboriginal cultural paradigms, and an analysis of the Courthouse building type, drawing on a number of recent Courthouse projects from around Australia' -- back cover
