Summary
"A hundred years ago, Australia was home to the 'ethnomaniacs', an unruly brigade of self-taught researchers, united only in their quest to document Aboriginal life before its presumed extinction. R.H. Mathews, an Australian born surveyor and self-styled 'quiet worker', was the most maligned of these figures, and according to historian Martin thomas the most undervalued. After a formative encounter with a cave painting north of Sydney, mathews converted to anthropology and devoted the remainder of his life to creating a vast corpus of writings on Aboriginal culturres, focused on south-east Australia. His work is now quoted routinely in native title claims and heritage studies, and as the full scope of his achievement comes to be recognised, he emerges as one of our most important documentors of Aboriginal language, society and mythology." -- back cover
