Thesis examines the problem of interpreting mid Holocene occupation dates for the occupation of the Furneaux Islands; survey of historical theories on the causes of the contemporary absence of occupation on the islands; factors affecting the abandonment and extinction of island populations; island use internationally and in Australia; use of watercraft in Tasmania; archaeological survey - methodology, site distribution and results; Beeton Rockshelter (Badger Island) and Mannalargenna Cave (Prime Seal Island) excavation - dates, sediment analysis, faunal, shellfish, seabird (including muttonbird) analysis, lithic analysis; reconstruction of the habitation of the Bassian environment and greater Tasmania; evidence for climate change; argues that the Flinders Island group was inhabited by a relic population up to 4500 BP and that its extinction followed climatic change
