Summary
Barbara Wentworth was the wife of the Honourable William (Bill) Wentworth, a politician, the first Minister-in-charge of Aboriginal Affairs in 1968, and the ‘founding father’ of the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies. Between the years of 1962-1988 the Wentworths travelled to many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities around Australia, often to remote locations accessible only by four-wheel drive. Barbara Wentworth documented much of these trips, including their many interactions with Indigenous people and communities. Photographs taken during trips to outback Queensland, Depuch Island in Western Australia, and Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory. Subjects include: Hotels and motels; trucks and machinery; Qantilda Museum; horse-drawn cart and plaque; town scenes; rock pool; rock engravings (petroglyphs); Japanese or Chinese gravestones; Royal Flying Doctor Service light plane; cattle truck; display for Hitchcock and Anderson; wildflowers; mining pit; landscape scenes - lake and trees; building ruins; dirt road; pipeline; carnival ride; group portraits; fishing with hand-reel; green ant nest; school, chilren's art; camp sites; dinner party; tame sulpher-crested cockatoo; child on a horse; water lilies
