Summary
Barbara Wentworth was the wife of the Honourable William (Bill) Wentworth, a politician, the first Minister-in-charge of Aboriginal Affairs in 1968, and the ‘founding father’ of the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies. Between the years of 1962-1988 the Wentworths travelled to many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities around Australia, often to remote locations accessible only by four-wheel drive. Barbara Wentworth documented much of these trips, including their many interactions with Indigenous people and communities. Photographs taken during the Wentworths' trip to the Torres Strait Islands. Subjects include: Mother's Union; individual and group portraits; health centre; dingys and sailboats; outrigger canoe; food preparation; monument; memorial; church; turtle farm; tractor; fishing; landscape scenes - coral reef and islands; Papuan settlement; signs objecting to border change; almond trees; landscape - mountain; ants; light plane; map of north Queensland; prawning fleet; library
