Summary
Barbara Wentworth was the wife of the Honourable William (Bill) Wentworth, a politician, the first Minister-in-charge of Aboriginal Affairs in 1968, and the ‘founding father’ of the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies. Between the years of 1962-1988 the Wentworths travelled to many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities around Australia, often to remote locations accessible only by four-wheel drive. Barbara Wentworth documented much of these trips, including their many interactions with Indigenous people and communities. Photographs taken during the Wentworths' trip to the Gulf of Carpentaria. Subjects include: Aerial overviews; axe grinding grooves; camp scenes; driving through bushland; landscape scenes; hunting for pandanus nuts; picnic on the beach at the Gulf of Carpentaria; grave with stone markers; dirt tracks; crocodile hunters; rivers and lagoons; water lilies; wooden jetty; small boat; mining scenes; rope bridge; helicopter; rock paintings; burial logs; desert landscapes; housing; tamarind trees; wedge-tailed eagle; bore; hay-bales on truck; town scene; maps; Queensland - Northern Territory border
