Summary
Barbara Wentworth was the wife of the Honourable William (Bill) Wentworth, a politician, the first Minister-in-charge of Aboriginal Affairs in 1968, and the ‘founding father’ of the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies. Between the years of 1962-1988 the Wentworths travelled to many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities around Australia, often to remote locations accessible only by four-wheel drive. Barbara Wentworth documented much of these trips, including their many interactions with Indigenous people and communities. These photographs were taken during the Wentworth's trip along the Birdsville Track and surrounds. Subjects include: landscapes; desert; aerial views; mustering brumbies; creeks and rivers; family portraits; homesteads and stations; geological survey; camp sites; mining industry; oil and water bores; hotels; vegetable garden; Burke and Wills memorial; vehicles; Bluebird speed record on Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre; aviary; Killalpaninna Lutheran Mission; building ruins; tape recording songs and words; logging; transceiver radio; town scenes; stone artefacts; map; light plane; helicopter; signposts; cattle train; children on wool bales; dingo hides; nurses; Australian Inland Mission
