Summary
Barbara Wentworth was the wife of the Honourable William (Bill) Wentworth, a politician, the first Minister-in-charge of Aboriginal Affairs in 1968, and the ‘founding father’ of the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies. Between the years of 1962-1988 the Wentworths travelled to many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities around Australia, often to remote locations accessible only by four-wheel drive. Barbara Wentworth documented much of these trips, including their many interactions with Indigenous people and communities. Subjects include: Packing vehicle for trip; individual, group and family portraits; gemstones and mining; landscape scenes - bush land, lakes, rivers and mountains; camp sites; Eastern bearded dragon; four-wheel driving; tracks and roads; camels; soaks (water source); desert; rock painting; wild flowers; collecting firewood; helicopter; hotel; Japanese graveyard; aerial views; port; nurse; health centre; brick ruins - old fireplace; church; ship; babies and children; maps; fruit and vegetable gardens
