Summary
Although the Maraian Ceremony is not traditional with the Gunwinggu people of Croker Island, the tribal brother of a man who died five years ago wanted to organize the ceremony with the help of relatives from Maningrida. The mainland people know the details of the ritual and help organize the process as well as take part in it. The Maraiian is a mortuary rite accorded to the most important members of the tribe. It is comprised of a series of acts designed to keep the spirit of the dead in peace and to keep them away from the sacred objects. The ceremony takes approximately a month. Depicted is preparing the ceremonial area, preparing ceremonial objects, painting up, and dances by the Dua and Yirritja moieties... various fish, kangaroo, stingray and plains turkey dances. The climax of the ceremony is the revealing of the sacred objects. The novices and their mothers hold onto a forked tree with blankets over their heads while the men dance around them, and then rush them. The women move off and the men chant as one man climbs the tree. The female relatives of the dead man are purified by smoke from a fire and the ceremony is over. (N.B. A 2 1/2 hr.
