Summary
A collection of manuscript materials created by husband and wife, Professor Richard Moyle and Linden Moyle, recording the music, ritual practices and cultural knowledge shared with them by central and West Australian communities. Professor Moyle's work on Aboriginal Australian ethnomusicology has been recognised for its detailed documentation of musical practice and ceremonial life in central Australian communities, and has been extensively cited. The fieldwork recorded in this collection was undertaken between 1974 and 1982, with speakers of Pintupi at the Kungkayurnti outstation and Balgo, Alyawarra from Ammaroo Station and neighbouring areas, and Kukatja at Balgo. The research records the dynamic nature of central Australian cultures during this period, for instance in Balgo where the community was actively seeking to learn songs from other locations. This collection is a significant record of musical practice and cultural knowledge in these communities. It includes field notes, maps of important cultural sites, transcripts, film notes and illustrations of rituals and objects. Transcriptions and translations of songs and interviews are a valuable record of these languages, including rare ritual language terms that may not have been recorded by other researchers
