Summary
"This paper considers a group of thirty-six photographs of Aboriginal people from the Kulin nation, taken by squatter and amateur photographer John Hunter Kerr in northern Victoria during the 1850s. It provides a case study of the historical trajectory of this series of images, and describes how the intentions of the photographer and the historical context of his sitters have been overtaken and forgotten as the images left the photographer's control and moved into the public domain. Photographs can be powerful instruments of record, but images, especially those of Indigenous peoples, can also be powerful instruments of oppression, distancing and racism. A consideration of the creation, use and re-use of these images during the first sixty years after they were made can throw light on inter-cultural relationships, story-telling, myth-making, the reshaping of colonial memories, and racial ideas in colonial Australia and the wider world. The images are still influential: most recently, two contemporary artists have been inspired by some of Kerr's photographs to create two very different works." [Authors abstract]
