Summary
"This is the beginning of a series of articles on Primitive Medicine in Australia. However, it will not be merely a quaint description of primitive medicine, embalmed as it were for display in some museum basement. The aim is to throw light on the "sufferer-healer relationship" between patient and doctor, as this is a relationship close to the heart of every society—past, present and future. The introductory article defines the term "sufferer-healer relationship" and affirms the need for modern Western medicine to look outside its own terms of reference to other cultures, for it is possible that "the dynamic forces of suffering have been neglected by modern medical psychology". The following articles describe in detail the traditional medicine in four dis-tinct regions of Australia. The final article will then evaluate the essential features of traditional medicine and their significance for the effective management of the "sufferer-healer relationship" in modern medicine. As the articles unfold, the reader is invited to look critically at the dynamics of traditional medicine, comparing and contrasting one tribe against the other and against modern medical thought and practice. The exercise is both challenging and thought provoking." -- Article 1
