Summary
  • "The Government is moving to introduce landmark reforms to the welfare system which, over time, will see the national roll out of a non-discriminatory scheme to income manage welfare payments in disadvantaged regions across Australia. Simultaneously, the Government is moving to reinstate the Racial Discrimination Act 1975 (RDA) in relation to the operation of the Northern Territory Emergency Response (NTER) and related legislation operating in the Northern Territory and Queensland. The removal of the RDA suspension, along with the redesign of relevant measures to ensure they conform with the RDA will strengthen the NTER and assist in resetting the Government's relationship with Aboriginal people nationally."--FaHCSIA web site
  • Part 1 discusses the Australian government?s position on future directions for the Northern Territory Emergency Response; Part 2 outlines the government's commitment to closing the gap in the Northern Territory in the seven COAG identified areas (or building blocks) of: 1.Governance and Leadership; 2.Early Childhood; 3.Schooling; 4.Health; 5.Economic Participation; 6.Healthy Homes; and 7.Safe Communities
