Summary
A collection of prints from the early 20th Century to the 1980s depicting various aspects of Aboriginal life and material culture in and around Australia. The collection was accumulated at Australia House in London by the Australian Information Service, a federal government agency created to promote the image of Australia. Once known as the Department of Information and Australian News and Information Bureau, it was later at different times, Promotion Australia, the Australian Overseas Information Service and the International Public Affairs Branch. The collection was drawn upon for exhibitions held at Australia House and shows Aboriginal people participating in the activities of the Australian economy, traditional ritual, dance song and ceremony and engaging in a range of educational activities. The prints themselves include extensive captions written by the Australian Information Service staff and others that provide a indication of contemporary European Australian attitudes to Aboriginal Australians. Subjects include: Health; art; education; portrait; politics; land rights; religion; housing; propoganda; government
