Summary
Barbara Wentworth was the wife of the Honourable William (Bill) Wentworth, a politician, the first Minister-in-charge of Aboriginal Affairs in 1968, and the ‘founding father’ of the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies. Between the years of 1962-1988 the Wentworths travelled to many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities around Australia, often to remote locations accessible only by four-wheel drive. Barbara Wentworth documented much of these trips, including their many interactions with Indigenous people and communities. This collection documents the Wentworths' travels through northern Australia. Subjects include: Painting; individual and group portraits; clinic; children; truck; rifle; puppies; making Johnny cakes; campsite; ants' nest (termite mound); buffalo hunting; buffalo skinning; mining; bauxite; test drilling; crocodile souviners; tree trunk with signs; children on a jetty/wharf
