Summary
Michael Gracey is a pediatrician and an Australia’s first Professor of Aboriginal Health in 1997. Also he was a president of the International Paediatric Association and was a president at International Pediatrics Congress in Amsterdam in 1998. His main focused was on improving health of infants and children in socially disadvantaged groups in developing countries and of Aboriginal children in Western Australia, especially in the Kimberley. He also gives his personal overview of Aboriginal health in particularly Aboriginal children’s health.This is an autobiography of Michael Gracey which talks about his childhood in the 1940s and 50s, through Medical School. Also discusses about day to day lives and health of children in many different places in Australia and many other countries including Papua New Guineaa Latin America and Britain. He has also co-ordinated health workshops and conferences in child health in Asia –Pacific countries like Japan and China. Michael Gracey has also contributed his knowledge and time in children’s health in Central and West Asian countries particularly Azerbajan, Kyrgyztan and Kazakhatan and India and Thailand, and with Tibetan refugee children in the Himalayas. One of his major joint project was collaboration with pediatricians in the Dr Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital in Jakarta in “Secrets of Diarrhea”. Some of Michael Gracey’s main interests, ranged through several disciplines relevant to children's health: they included clinical paediatrics; medical research; gastrointestinal diseases, particularly gut infections; nutrition, growth, and malnutrition; public health; indigenous health in Australia and among other ethnic groups; international child health; health administration; policy development and analysis; and academia
