Summary
Relationship between Indigenous health, traditional lifestyles and ties to the land are examined. Narrated footage presents the way Indigenous people think and live and how this impacts on health issues. Includes historical information regarding daily life, kinship, relationship to land and spiritual matters and how these issues flow through to the modern day and effect daily life and health issues. This film also looks at issues such as overcrowding in houses and family responsibilities; treatment of dogs and inclusion in home life; inability to budget, store and prepare expensive western food; ways of raising children and sharing food/shelter; the circle of sickness; rubbish removal; gardening fruit and vegetables; the importance of bushtucker such as turtle and dugong; meat shared throughout the community. Outstations are being used to reintroduce traditional ways into the community and includes discussion of market gardens; preparation of food and nutrition; gathering food and the need to travel to follow food supply; improved exercise as communities are searching and gathering food. Psychological effects on health of people required to be away from home for medical treatment. The Darwin hospital has introduced a program to incorporate some elements of bushtucker into the patients diet to help maintain links to traditional ways. Houses designed to better suit family needs; improved animal care by providing veterinary services thus improving family health as a consequence. Indigenous way of raising children are different from western ways and includes elements of social-parenting from extended family
