Summary
[Abstract from AIATSIS Research - Dr Laura Kostanski and Associate Professor Ian D Clark]In 2005 the authors delivered a paper at the Indigenous Place Names Old and New Conference convened in Canberra. The paper discussed various aspects of historical and contemporary use of Indigenous names in Victoria. Topics ranged from dual naming issues which arise when the colonial geographical areas overlaps multiple Indigenous language areas (crosslectal) to the paucity of Indigenous language records necessitating the 'invention' of Indigenous names. A rating system for the use of Indigenous names in contemporary naming projects (where doublet or triplet intralectals exist) was also developed and promoted for the first time. Since the delivery of that paper, various developments have occured in Indigenous naming in Australia, and the authors will provide an update on the status of some of the more recent naming programs. Specific case studies, such as the renaming of rock art sites in the Grampians National Park during the 1990s, the protracted yet contemporary Mt Niggerhead debate, and a recent State forest naming project will be referred to in this paper
