Fieldwork 1966-67 Laverton & Warburton Ranges, Pitjantjara & Pintubi people also studied, some differences in dialect noticed, but all speak Western Desert language, 1966 census; Areas named for constructed blinds used in hunting game, tree platform-blinds also used; Hunting mostly done with rifles although spears are always carried; description of Pintupi men spearing emu from brush blind Clutterbuck Hills, accounts of other traditional methods, fire, poisoning with pituri; tracking ability, stalking; Firesticks carried, kangaroo dogs of Mantjiltjara Wiluna; Varieties of small game, method used by women with digging sticks & bowls, catching goanna bowls, belts for carrying; Cooking, meat & bone sometimes pounded together before eating; Cleaning & transporting large game, removal of leg tendons, various uses, fat as fixative, methods of cooking believed to make division of carcass easier; first & second phases of butchering, division into 9 (named) portions for kangaroo, 4 for emu, offal to spearman; Flakes, wooden wedges & rock used for divisional sharing of meat between relatives & friends, rules for this; Camp size determined by available game; Wanampi Well camp example; How quantitative aspects of sharing can help archaeologists, gives number of Ngatatjara, animal weight, & average amount of meat per person on 10 occasions; Bibliography
