Summary
In March 1989, Judy Atkinson from the Department of Aboriginal Affairs (Qld.) approached Icy Tea (Inala Community Theatre) to write and produce a play on the issues of family violence and child abuse, for performance in Murri Aboriginal communities. A group of 8 women spent a month developing a structure for the play. To be shown outdoors, it would not rely on words but on mime, dance and song. Rehearsals commenced in September with 5 of the group and a musician. The process was rewarding, as Murri and white women shared their lives, laughter and support for each other. Using song, home-made instruments, and a soundscape of birds, babies and bees, the play talks about things that people are afraid to talk about, things that are taboo, like violence in the home, child sexual abuse, drinking and poverty. ‘No more’ shows women and children of different cultures supporting each other, being strong and taking control of their lives. The recording is in poor condition. [Abstract drawn from opening titles narration in the video recording of the play]
