Summary
Mungo Lady is the ninth episode of the From Spirit to Spirit series. Mungo Lady was the name given to the remains of a young Barkinji women who lived in remote Australia over twenty seven thousand years ago. At twenty five years of age she died. In an elaborate funeral ceremony she was covered in sacred red ochre and cremated by her people, the Barkinji tribe on the shores of the great Mungo Lake. Twenty years ago, her remains were taken from the place of her burial and there were studies, examinations and she was exhibited across the world and seen by millions of people. While it was perceived as a discovery in white eyes, it was considered sacrilege to the local Barkinji people. Mari Bennett, a Barkinji women herself, and director of this episode of From Spirit to Spirit, returns with the women elders of the tribe as they undertake a physical and spiritual journey from the original burial site to discover the past and connect with a woman over twenty seven thousand years old. This program is about the re-appropriation of Aboriginal remains and cultural survival.
