Collection of photographs of the Makarata (Magarada) peacemaking cermony which took place at Milingimbi in 1951. There are also portraits of teachers and pupils at the Methodist Overseas Mission at Milingimbi. The majority of photographs were taken by Beulah Lowe, a teacher and linguist working at the Methodist Overseas Mission at Milingimbi mission station, Arnhem Land. The ceremony was also photographed by Fritz Goro (LIFE magazine photographer) and Axel Poignant who was acting as his assistant. A number of photographs in this collection were taken by Axel Poignant. Subjects include: portraits; ceremonial dance; body painting; digeridoo; spears; spear throwing; school groups; mission
