Statement on subject of Native Police in Melbourne district; attempts to organize a native police force in 1839, 1841 and 1842; in 1842 a small number of Port Phillip and Westernport blacks detached from Narre Narre Warren Aboriginal station, by Mr. Dana; the 25 young men enrolled had had long intercourse with whites and had partially adopted their habits; after initial training first duties were to assist police in following certain bushrangers; result of trial execeedingly satisfactory; conduct good, services valuable in checking continual aggressions of the natives upon settlers; return showing the number, ages, character, conduct and services of the party of Native Police in the Port Phillip district in Feb. 1842 and a return of the standing orders when on service; rations, uniform and arms; results coincide with Mr. Danas opinion that they should be placed under regulations as nearly approaching military law as possible
