speech by Dr Dawn Casey
Transcript of speech presented by Dawn Casey to the National Press Club Canberra, July 4, 2012; concerns Indigenous Business Australia's (IBA) and Indigenous Land Corporation's (ILC) investments in business enterprises, projects, and funding for Indigenous small business, which provides work (including self-employment opportunities) for Indigenous Australians; funds are invested in the tourism, hospitality and pastoral industries, which in turn leads to people being able to afford housing; Indigenous knowledge has lead to successful innovation in the carbon economy, in particular, the Fish River Fire Project established by the Indigenous Land Corporation, which demonstrates how "Indigenous pattern burning can establish a sustainable enterprise that not only protects the property's significant biodiversity values, but also generates employment and income for Indigenous people" [p. 10]
