Summary
"Australia's Northern Territory has, in diverse ways, inform the work of many contemporary Australian artists. This book examines the work of living artists at the time of writing - both Indigenous and non-Indigenous - whose work has been so influence. The former have been compelled by ties to ancestral lands in the latter are sojourners resident long enough for the Territory to intrigue and transform. The closing decades of the 20th century saw the rise of Australia's Indigenous art, in public view and esteem and national and international stages. In terms of volume, innovation and commercialisation, its growth has been unprecedented. There are now thousands of Aboriginal visual artists most of whom reside in the Northern Territory. As this book will show, the Territory was, in the early 1970s, the incubator of this most recent firing of Indigenous art. The remote Aboriginal communities whose artists are featured in this book are still most visible centres for the production of Indigenous art. Consequently the Northern Territory has been identified with Aboriginality in a way that no other part of Australia has. Indeed there has been a cleavage of the Northern Territory from the rest of Australia, as other States came to be regarded as Europeanised space. This has skewed the reception of art made by non-Territory urban Aboriginal artists and made invisible much contemporary art by non-Indigenous Territorians. As well as highlighting the recent work of Territory-based contemporary Aboriginal artists, this book aims to showcase the work of living, non-Indigenous practitioners who have worked in the Northern Territory from as far back as 1970s."
