Reproduction of 1894-1925 correspondence from bush policeman Ernest Cowle, stationed at Illamurta Springs and Paddy Byrne, postal officer at Charlotte Waters, to biologist and anthropologist Baldwin Spencer; background information about Cowle, including section on his attitude towards Aborigine people; letters cover range of subjects relating to Cowle's daily life and work; observations on Aboriginal people, their lives and customs; attitudes towards Aboriginal people and his relationships with, and treatment of, them; concern at lack of protection for Aboriginal people in railway concessions; Byrne's background, including understanding attitude towards Aboriginal people and good relations with Southern Arrernte who collected zoological specimens for him; letters include descriptions of Aboriginal people, their activities and culture; appendices include letters from Cole to Edward Stirling and R.H.
