Approaching the new millennium, the outgoing Board of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander Commission (ATSIC) convened a meeting of Indigenous leaders to consider and discuss a range of key issues facing Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander peoples; this was a two day workshop, now referred to as the Indigenous Leaders Summit; themes of the four sessions were: self-determination (includes definitions and principles), strategies for the future, pursuing an Indigenous rights agenda, creating regional autonomy (including native title)
