Summary
A film dealing with the Wardaman Indigenous people's reclamation of ancestral lands in the Northern Territory. With the coming of the white pastoralists the traditional owners were dispossessed, many of them being shot, and the land was taken up by huge cattle stations, often foreign-owned. Today the people are negotiating with the Northern Territory government to excise important land sites from the cattle stations for their own use. The story includes conversations with the surveyors, station representatives and Indigenous people entitled to claim land. The film also covers historical, geographical and environmental issues and includes stories of Indigenous adult working conditions; Indigenous children working fans so the White people could eat in comfort and keep the flies away; story of massacre at Delamere; places where bones are hidden and cave paintings. Two archaeologists working in the community to help find historical information and factual evidence of life and traditions. Earthwatch is involved in recording sites, this helps allow the Wardaman people to move around the land freely; the archaeologists record a painted droving scene. Film includes impact of hard hooved animals on the environment and the people's desire to rehabilitate the land and Bill Harney's Lightning Brothers Tours
