Summary
Hospital admission data for all acute public and private hospitals in New South Wales for the 6-year period 1989-1995 was analysed to explore the pattern for surgical procedures in the Indigenous population compared with the non-Indigenous population. Results show that when adjustments are made for the differing age composition of the two populations, the medical admission rate for the Indigenous population is approximately double the rate for the non-Indigenous population; however the non-Indigenous admission rate for surgery is about 1.3 times the Indigenous surgical admission rate; reasons given for this include cultural opposition to surgery and substitution of medical treatment for surgery
