Summary
  • Picture composes 15 wood-engraved illustrations with contemporary hand colouring, each with a printed caption in German underneath in Fraktur Gothic font. The picture tells the story of two native boys who are treated to dinner by a white farmer who gives them food to take home. They return at night to rob his house, but catching them in the act of stealing, the farmer nails the boys to the wall and flogs them. The caricatures of the native boys are clearly based on depictions of Australian Aborigines. -- description from bookseller's catalogue
  • The "Munchener Bilderbogen" was the most commercially successful series of German popular prints of the second half of the nineteenth century, with some 1200 different prints produced during this period. The popular consumption of such racist and denigrating imagery reached an ugly peak in the 1880s, with a proliferation of satirical prints, exploitational photographs, lurid advertising graphics and grotesque touring side-show performances, all highlighting in some way the inferiority of the non-white races. This print is a confronting example of that phenomenon, which - very generally speaking - has tended to replace the less stridently racist and more scientifically curious view of non-Europeans prevalent in the first half of the nineteenth century. -- taken from bookseller's catalogue
