Summary
Reviews the research literature in order to examine reasons for the high incidence of chronic diseases, particularly obesity and non-insulin-dependent diabetes (NIDDM), in the Australian Aboriginal population; suggests that carbohydrate and lipid metabolism favoured survival when Aboriginal people lived a traditional hunter-gatherer life style but their "selective insulin resistance" now predisposes them to NIDDM; recommends modifications to both diet and life style as the best approach to treating and preventing NIDDM
