Study of Indigenous Australians' civil rights struggle to obtain legal equality with non-Indigenous Australians; argues civil rights won by, not handed to, Indigenous Australians, mainly between mid nineteen fifties and mid nineteen seventies; changes mainly legislative; defines and discusses civil rights in context of Australia's Indigenous people; discusses changes and reasons for changes in Commonwealth and each state's legislation; limits of legislative changes in addressing disadvantage, looking particularly at health, water supply and education; possible conflicts between self-determination and anti-discrimination legislation; ongoing fight for Indigenous rights arguing need to direct activism to international arena if to be successful as governments wish to protect Australia's reputation
