Summary
A collection of 8mm films recorded by CMS missionaries in Northern Australia between 1960 and 1974. Most of the material - the original numbered reels (see documentation) - were recorded in the 1960s by T.C. (Cam) and Betty Cooke, and collected by David and Merrill Hassall, missionaries in Northern Australia between 1963-70, who also contributed material they recorded in that period. The films record Aboriginal dancing at Oenpelli in 1967, caves and rock art in 1971, landscape, community and mission scenes. These films represents the CMS as a working unit of missionary focused activities, personal family scenes illustrate the social, cultural and educational values of the missionary employee. These films offer an insight into the lives and activities of the CMS members and families, including the education of Aboriginal people in their care. The films contribute a deeper contextual understanding of the era the missions were operating in. The films are a record of work amongst Aboriginal people showing groups of people and individuals, documenting activities, and containing songs and spoken Aboriginal languages
