Summary
A profile of the life and work of Charles Perkins. Perkins, an Arrernte man, was born in 1936 the third youngest of fifteen children at 'The Bungalow', two miles from Alice Springs. He lived there for six years and from there went to Alice Springs and then to Adelaide for secondary education at the Le Fevre Boy's School. At 15 he worked as an apprentice fitter and turner at the British Tube Mill, after which he went to play soccer in England. Returning to Australia he took up a position as captain/coach of a Croatian soccer team in Adelaide and later became captain of the Pan Hellenic team. He married Eileen Munchenberg and received a university scholarship to study psychology and anthropology at Sydney University. After receiving his degree he became the manager of the Foundation for Aboriginal Affairs in Sydney. Footage shown includes a visit to 'The Bungalow' and Alice Springs, playing cards with his mother, a visit to Le Fevre Boy's School, the work of the freedom riders in Moree, his work at the Foundation offices and speaking at various luncheons and a public rally. Those interviewed are Perkins, Eileen Perkins (nee Munchenberg), Mr and Mrs Munchenberg and Father Smith, one of his old teachers
