Summary
Before settling on the name Botany Bay, Cook had written several other names: Bottony Bay, Bottonist Harbour, Botany Harbour then Stingray Harbour due to the quantity of stingrays to be found there. Skeat Bay and Bay of Plants were also used. He did however settle on Botany Bay. The journal entries of Cook, Hicks, Pickersgill and Solander also relate in detail to first contact with Aboriginals. At each attempt at landing they were met by resistance from groups of men with spears, so when the use of beads and other gifts were not accepted they found it necessary to shoot at them sometimes resulting in injury
