Summary
[Abstract from AIATSIS Research - Dr Jakelin Troy, Suzanne Bradshaw and Christine Evans] The major rationale for learning languages is that being able to communicate proficiently provides learners with essential communication skills in the target language, an intercultural capability, and an understanding of the role of language and culture in human communication. It provides the opportunity for students to engage with the linguistic and cultural diversity of humanity; to reflect on their understanding of human experience as varied in all aspects of social life, and their own participation and ways of being in the world. This seminar will introduce the Australian languages content in the 'Draft shape of the Australian Curriculum: Languages' in a workshop style forum that will provide the audience with opportunity to explore the paper and give comment to ACARA. Associate Professor Angela Scarino from the University of South Australia and Jaky Troy were the writers of the draft shape paper, supported by expert panels of languages teachers, curriculum experts in languages pedagogy, academics and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages teachers linguists and community members
