Summary
"Reconciliation Australia and Auspoll began collaboration on the Reconciliation Barometer project in February 2007. The objective of the research was to develop a tool to measure the progress of reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. While improvements in Indigenous health, employment, housing and education are essential for the reconciliation process, equally important, and at the core of reconciliation, is the relationship between the first Australians and those who have come since. If we are to improve the relationship and create an environment which provides equal life chances for all Australians we must first understand the underlying values and perceptions that shape this relationship and influence our society today. The Australian Reconciliation Barometer delves into the heart of our nation to identify the attitudes Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians hold about each other, and about reconciliation in this country. It also attempts to shed some light on why we hold these attitudes. This 2012 edition is the third iteration of the Barometer, following the initial two studies in 2008 and 2010." -- [taken from background page 5]
