Summary
Photographs collected by members of the Hey family. Moravian missionaries Nikolaus or Nicholas Hey (1862-1951) and his wife, Mary Anne Barnes (1869-?) were responsible for the establishment of several missions in the Cape York Peninsula, including Mapoon, Weipa and Aurukun. They arrived at Mapoon in 1891 and remained there until their retirement in 1919 at which time they returned to Sydney to be close to their four children. Many of the photographs in this collection depict family portraits from early 1900 to 1990. Images relating to the missions, especially Mapoon, capture the construction of the earliest buildings such as the church and the school. Portraits of the missions' residents and their employment in the area of agriculture at Mapoon, Aurukun and Weipa are also included in this collection. Subjects include: missions; mission buildings; Christian ceremonies; hunting; employment; agriculture; education; transport; weddings; community portraits
