Summary
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Workers (AIEWs) comprise a significant occupational group working in the education industry. Their presence in schools and pre-schools throughout Australia has demonstrated that they are a vital resource for Aboriginal education. The need for a research project into working conditions and award provisions for AIEWs in all states and territories resulted in funding and data gathering in 1992, and this report is the result of a 1993 extension to the project. Terms of reference were : 1. to define the current funding arrangements for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Workers in each State and Territory; 2. to list the current awards which operate in each State and Territory. Where awards do not exist, to investigate the current employment relationship, e.g. individual contract with school, casual employment relationships; 3. to establish current working conditions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Workers, including salaries, hours of work, superannuation; 4. to establish any qualification requirements for employment, availability of training and recognition of such training; 5. to establish the current pattern of employment, i.e. length of tenure in the position, role of the education worker in schools, relationship to the school and general community; 6. any other matters as agreed by the advisory committee
