Summary
The Committee reported that it had so far received 35 replies to a ‘Circular Letter sent by the Clerk of the Legislative Council to Benches of Magistrates, Commissioners of Crown Lands, and other Gentlemen residing too remote from Sydney’. The Circular consisted of 18 questions covering Aboriginal population figures and other demographic data, living conditions and means of subsistence of Aboriginal people, use of ‘Hospital or Medical treatment’, inter-racial attitudes, violence and other matters such as infanticide, ‘half-castes’ and declining populations. Dissatisfied, the Committee Chairman writes “Different Members of the committee have undertaken to produce, next year, from their 144 several Districts, intelligent Aborigines able to state their own views of their condition; a species of testimony so desirable that, if with no other view than to obtain it, your Committee would have forborne to make a final Report this Session; your Committee purposes, at present, to do no more than report the evidence they have already taken, and the means by which they hope obtain more.” Includes the transcript of 209 questions put to Mahroot, alias the Boatswain, by the Committee
