Note
Aboriginal people began producing radio programmes in Western Australia in 1978 at Radio 6NR in Perth. The early programmes emphasised and celebrated Aboriginal culture, writing and music, reflecting the re-emergence of Aboriginal voices after decades of assimilationist repression and exclusion. Community news and current affairs segments were soon added to the programmes as the Aboriginal broadcasters and their listeners realised the considerable potential to communicate alternative perspectives to the largely hostile or indifferent mainstream news treatment of Aboriginal affairs. Radio 6NR continued to provide the bulk of training and airtime for Aboriginal broadcasters until 1985 when the Western Australian Aboriginal Media Association (WAAMA) in Perth and Waringarri Media in Kununurra were established, with both operating from their own radio studios by the following year
