Summary
Discusses Aboriginal placenames reported for places around Port Jackson and Botany Bay, on NSW central coast, between 1788 and 1911; history of placenames reported by members of First Fleet in 1788 by British settlement in Port Jackson (Sydney Harbour); other Aboriginal placenames were reported by early surveyors and European visitors to colony, and then in late 1800s by eminent local residents. Questions and uncertainties exist for some reported names for many reasons; for example, some names - both Aboriginal and early British are imprecisely or ambiguously provenanced, there are variations in spelling where Aboriginal placenames are reported by several different people; Aboriginal informants for these names are very rarely mentioned in any documents; few Aboriginal placenames were adopted by British colonists and are still in use, albeit spelt slightly differently, but many others are rarely mentioned; 2005, twenty Aboriginal placenames for Sydney Harbour locations, which until recently had not been used, were formally gazetted as dual names in a dual naming project by the NSW Geographical Names Board which aims to give greater recognition to the region's Aboriginal heritage
