Summary
"This study focuses on Aboriginal language and group names in north-east Victoria, one of the most problematical areas in Victoria and shows that a careful analysis of primary sources is still capable of generating fresh insights and removing some of the confusion that surrounds the determination of these names. It argues that the key to understanding multiple terms of reference in north-east Victoria might involve endonymic and exonymic uses; especially ones that are sensitive to micro and macro group perspectives. It confirms that Kwart Kwart is a cognate of Yorta Yorta, that Minyambuta/ Minubuddong is likely to be a Wiradjuri exonym applied to the Pallanganmiddang, and that Pallanganmiddang is both a local group name and a language name. It is also argued that Waywurru is likely to be a Kulinic exonym referring to the Pallanganmiddang people." -- [Authors abstract] page
