mitch torres; storyteller, director, producer, writer, researcher, actor and documentary maker; born 30 August 1964 in Broome Hospital; prefers her name written as 'mitch torres'; paternal great granddaughter of Catalino Torres, a 'Manilaman' from the Phillipines, and Matilda Ida Tiolbadonga, Jabirr Jabirr and Bardi descent; paternal granddaughter of Joseph Catalino Torres, Jabirr Jabirr and Manilaman descent, and Irene Drummond, Djugan, Yawuru and Scottish descent, daughter of Casimier Earnest Torres and May Brown; niece of Theresa Torres, Eddie Torres; Michael Torres; maternal granddaughter of Tom Brown, Nyikina, Walmajarri, Irish descent, and Angelina Kimberley, Gooniyandi, Scottish descent; sister of Jeffrey, Eileen and Alison; as a young child lived on Millijdi, a cattle station near Fitzroy Crossing which her father and mother were managing; in about 1967, after her parents experienced discrimination managing the station, the family moved into Broome; grew up on Back Street in Broome; part of Broome's Aboriginal Filipino community; moved to Sydney in 1983 as a nineteen year old to begin a career in dance at the Aboriginal & Islander School of Dance (NAISDA); injured her knee and moved into acting; became a television presenter for SBS in 1986; moved to Perth to work with ABC TV news in 1988; moved to the USA with her husband; moved back to Australia in 1991 when her father, Casimier, was diagnosed with cancer; worked with Magabala Books before working for ABC Radio Kimberley, then Radio 6NR in Perth; studied for a bachelor's degree in media at university; set up a film company, Act 1905 Films; set up Wawili Pitjas Films as a family business; mother of Cornel Ozies, Ebony, Prince, Jedda, Aretha
