Summary
Peter Sabatino; Torres Strait Islander of Kaurareg, Meriam, and Filipino descent; born in a segregated ward at Waiben / Thursday Island Hospital, 15 May 1951; named Simon Peter Sabatino at birth; took the name Christopher as a confirmation name; son of Stanislaus (Hislo) Sabatino and Camilla Durante; one of 10 children; grew up with his family on the Catholic Sacred Heart Mission Keriri / Hammond Island in Torres Strait; went to St Joseph's School, Hammond Island, 1957 to 1964; in 1965 Peter, his mother and two sisters travelled to Papua New Guinea to attend his eldest sister, Cecilia's, first profession at the completion of her novitiate; Peter stayed to attend St Mary's College and St Peter Chanel College Minor Seminary in Papua New Guinea; he studied for a short time at St Augustine's College in Cairns in 1970; in 1971 worked as a clerk at the Island Industries Board on Thursday Island in 1971; studied for the Catholic Priesthood from 1977 to 1978 at St Paul's National Seminary in Sydney; left the Seminary; worked in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander affairs in the fields of education, employment, reconciliation and community development; before retirement worked as the Program Coordinator for the Australian Indigenous Program for Caritas Australia
