Summary
"In an article published in History Australia in 2009 Cassandra Pybus reported grave allegations about William Dawes?s treatment of women in West Africa, charges that include debauchery and inciting his sexual partners to commit infanticide if they became pregnant. A fuller review of Colonial Office papers and the papers of Thomas Perronet Thompson casts doubt on the allegations. Dawes was certainly not the father of the reputed child of Anne Edwards, later Morgan, the woman Pybus names as having been convicted of infanticide. I also place Pybus?s inferences about Dawes?s relationship with Patyegarang in the longer, documented perspective of his benevolent work in Antigua and of his religiosity." [Author's abstract]
